How to Identify Fabric Before Buying Online: 7 Things to Check
One of the biggest challenges of buying clothes online is that you cannot physically touch the fabric before purchasing it. A fabric may look attractive in a product photo but feel different when you receive it.
That is why it is useful to check a few important details before placing your order.
1. Check the Fabric Composition
First, find out what the fabric is made of.
Common fabric types include:
Cotton
Polyester
Linen
Rayon/Viscose
Denim
Cotton Blend
Different materials can vary in comfort, durability, breathability, and care requirements.
2. Check the GSM
GSM stands for Grams per Square Meter. It is commonly used to indicate the weight of a fabric.
Generally, a higher GSM fabric can be heavier or denser, while a lower GSM fabric can be lighter. However, higher GSM does not automatically mean better quality.
The appropriate GSM depends on the type of fabric and how the clothing will be used.
3. Check the Fabric Thickness
Look for information about the fabric's thickness in the product description.
If possible, examine product photos from different angles. For white or light-colored clothing, pay particular attention to whether the fabric appears thin or see-through.
4. Look at the Weave and Texture
Zoom in on the product images and observe the surface of the fabric.
Try to determine whether it looks smooth, soft, rough, textured, or tightly woven.
Pictures cannot always show the exact texture, so customer reviews and the product description can provide additional information.
5. Check Whether the Fabric Has Stretch
Some fabrics stretch easily, while others have little or no elasticity.
This is particularly important when buying T-shirts, leggings, sportswear, or fitted clothing.
Look for terms such as Stretch, Non-Stretch, Spandex, or Elastane in the product description.
6. Check the Color and Color-Care Information
The color shown on your phone or computer screen may look slightly different from the actual product.
Check the listed color name and read customer reviews when available.
Also look for washing and care instructions to understand how to maintain the fabric and its color.
7. Check the Size Chart and Care Instructions
Take your measurements before ordering and compare them with the product's size chart.
An S, M, L, or XL size can vary between brands, so it is better to check the actual measurements rather than relying only on your usual size.
Also check whether the clothing requires special washing, ironing, or drying instructions.
